Broad Bodied Chaser. {Libellula Depressa Linnaeus} This species is widespread and common throughout southern England and Wales and has expanded into the north of England in the last few years. It occurs widely in Europe north to southern Scandinavia. The Species becomes less abundant in ponds in late successional stages but can be encouraged by clearance of bank side vegetation. It is not endangered nationally and benefits from pond and lake creation, but it has become less common in Fenland districts owing to the loss of farm ponds. This image was

Common Blue Damselfly. {Enallagma Cyathigerum Charpentier} This is one of the commonest dragonflies in all parts of Great Britain and Ireland and is often abundant. It occurs across a wide range of altitudes and latitudes and is the only breeding dragonfly in the Shetlands. In Europe the species is widespread, but absent from much of the Mediterranean. It is not threatened, but it may become less common as sites develop dense stands of emergent vegetation which begin to encroach on the open water habitats that it favours.

Nursery Web Spider. {Pisaura Mirabilis} Known for its unusual method of courtship in which the female requires a present from the male, before mating, of an insect wrapped in silk. Both sexes are grey-brown and a narrow pale stripe runs the length of the carapace and continues as a broad band on the tapering abdomen. The legs are long. The mother carries the huge egg sac under the body in an awkward tiptoe stance.
